Former Williams F1 team chief Claire Williams has opened up on her pursuit to save the team following the COVID-19 pandemic.

Former Williams deputy team principal Claire Williams has opened up about the immense challenges she faced during her final years leading the iconic Formula 1 team, revealing the emotional toll of fighting to keep the outfit afloat amid mounting financial difficulties.

Williams, who oversaw the day-to-day operations of the family-run team between 2013 and 2020, admitted she was often “beating herself up” as the Grove-based squad struggled through a difficult period marked by declining performances and financial uncertainty.

Speaking on the Up to Speed podcast, Williams explained that much of what was happening behind the scenes remained hidden from public view due to the confidential nature of Formula 1. As a result, fans and critics were often unaware of the pressures facing the team.

“You don’t know what’s going on behind the scenes,” Williams said. “Because you can’t talk about it, people don’t invariably know what you are going through on a day-to-day basis, so that’s really hard. You’re invariably beating yourself up more than anyone else could possibly do.”

Williams ultimately stepped down following the 2020 Italian Grand Prix weekend after making the difficult decision to sell the team to secure its future during the COVID-19 pandemic. The move brought an end to the Williams family’s direct involvement in the team founded by her father, Frank Williams.

Reflecting on the experience, Williams suggested the full story of the team’s struggles would surprise many fans.

“I think that probably jaws would fall to the floor,” she said. “Even not just the last few years but from the very start, how difficult and how challenging it was.”

Despite the speculation surrounding the team’s decline, Williams said she has chosen to keep many details private, insisting some aspects of the story remain too sensitive to share publicly.
