2026 F1 Standings 2026: Latest points leaders after the Canadian Grand Prix

The 2026 Formula 1 championship battle took another dramatic turn after an action-packed weekend at the Canadian Grand Prix, with Kimi Antonelli extending his lead at the top of the drivers’ standings following yet another stunning victory for Mercedes.

The young Italian continues to dominate the season and now looks increasingly comfortable as the championship frontrunner after securing his fourth consecutive Grand Prix win. Canada delivered everything Formula 1 fans could ask for — fierce battles, retirements, strategy drama, and major changes in both the drivers’ and constructors’ standings.

Antonelli’s biggest advantage came after teammate and closest rival George Russell suffered heartbreaking mechanical failure while fighting for the race lead. Russell had started from pole position and looked capable of challenging Antonelli throughout the opening stages of the race. The Mercedes duo traded positions several times in an intense battle that had fans on edge before Russell’s car suddenly lost power and forced him to retire midway through the Grand Prix.

That retirement proved hugely significant in the title race.

Antonelli capitalized perfectly, taking maximum points and stretching his championship advantage to 43 points after only five rounds of the season. The victory also marked a historic moment, as Antonelli became the first Italian driver since Alberto Ascari in the 1950s to win four Formula 1 races in a row.

Behind him, Lewis Hamilton delivered one of his strongest performances since joining Ferrari. The seven-time world champion finished second after a controlled and intelligent drive around the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. Hamilton’s podium result moved him ahead in the standings and gave Ferrari an important boost in the constructors’ championship battle.

Max Verstappen completed the podium for Red Bull Racing, collecting valuable points after what has been a difficult start to the new regulation era for the Milton Keynes outfit. Verstappen remains some distance behind the championship leaders but finally showed signs of recovery in Canada.

Meanwhile, McLaren endured a disastrous weekend. Lando Norris retired with technical problems, while Oscar Piastri failed to score heavily after penalties and strategy struggles. Their poor result allowed Ferrari to create a bigger gap in the constructors’ standings.
