The result has fueled speculation that the British driver could mount a serious challenge for a record-breaking eighth world championship title while wearing Ferrari red.
The contrast between Hamilton and Leclerc has become increasingly apparent in recent weeks. While Hamilton has found confidence and consistency behind the wheel, Leclerc has endured a difficult period that includes two consecutive retirements. The Monegasque driver, who finished ahead of Hamilton during the 2025 season standings, now faces growing pressure as the momentum within the Ferrari camp appears to be shifting.
Last season, Leclerc ended the championship in fifth place with 242 points, comfortably ahead of Hamilton, who finished sixth with 156 points. At the time, many believed Leclerc would maintain his status as Ferrari’s lead driver. However, the opening phase of the current campaign has painted a very different picture.
As Hamilton’s performances continue to improve, many observers believe Leclerc could soon become another name on the long list of drivers who struggled to match the seven-time champion over a full campaign. However, according to former Formula 1 engineer Rob Smedley, there is one notable exception.
Speaking on the High Performance Podcast, Smedley reflected on Hamilton’s extraordinary record against team-mates and highlighted the unique challenge posed by George Russell during their years together at Mercedes.
Smedley praised Hamilton’s ability to consistently outperform those sharing the garage with him, noting that very few drivers have been able to genuinely challenge him over an extended period.
He recalled the intense rivalry between Hamilton and former Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg. Although Rosberg famously secured the 2016 world championship, Smedley suggested that a combination of circumstances helped swing the title battle in the German’s favour.
According to Smedley, Hamilton experienced several reliability issues and race-ending mechanical problems throughout that season, making Rosberg’s title-winning campaign far more closely contested than the final standings might suggest. Even with those setbacks, Hamilton pushed Rosberg all the way and narrowly missed out on the championship.
Despite Rosberg’s success, Smedley believes George Russell represents the most significant exception to Hamilton’s long-standing record of team-mate dominance.
During their partnership at Mercedes, Russell consistently demonstrated that he could match Hamilton’s pace and performances. Smedley described Russell as an “anomaly,” arguing that the younger Briton delivered at an exceptionally high level during the latter stages of Hamilton’s Mercedes career.
In Smedley’s view, Russell was able to produce results against Hamilton that few others had managed, effectively standing out among a group of drivers who often found themselves overshadowed by the seven-time champion.

Podcast host Jake Humphrey suggested that Ferrari management may soon have to make a strategic decision regarding driver priorities. He pointed to Hamilton’s strong form, vast experience, and proven championship pedigree as reasons why the team could benefit from fully backing him.
Humphrey questioned whether Ferrari should continue treating both drivers equally when Hamilton is delivering stronger results and currently occupies a far more competitive position in the championship standings.
