Lewis Hamilton’s hopes of challenging for victory at the Monaco Grand Prix suffered a major setback after the FIA handed the seven-time Formula 1 world champion a five-second time penalty for speeding in the pit lane.
The penalty came during a crucial stage of the race as Hamilton was running in second position behind race leader Kimi Antonelli. The British driver entered the pits for a tyre change, attempting to gain an advantage through an undercut strategy that could have potentially helped him overtake Antonelli for the lead.
However, the plan quickly unraveled when race officials noted that Hamilton had exceeded the speed limit while entering the pit lane. The incident was immediately placed under investigation by the FIA stewards, who reviewed the available data and evidence. Shortly afterward, the stewards confirmed that Hamilton had breached the pit lane speed regulations and imposed a five-second penalty.
The punishment significantly damaged Hamilton’s chances of securing victory on the streets of Monte Carlo. Fortunately for the Ferrari driver, a later safety car period provided an opportunity to serve the penalty during a pit stop on lap 61, preventing the time from being added to his final race result after the chequered flag.
Hamilton was not the only driver to fall foul of the pit lane speed regulations during the race. Just a few laps after the penalty announcement, fellow championship contender George Russell was also penalized for the same offence. Russell received an identical five-second penalty after exceeding the pit lane speed limit, adding to what had already been a difficult weekend for the Mercedes driver.
Russell arrived in Monaco facing a significant challenge in the championship standings. He began the weekend 43 points behind his teammate and title rival Antonelli, who had been in outstanding form after winning the previous four Grands Prix. Matters became even more difficult for Russell when he struggled in qualifying, managing only sixth place on the grid while Antonelli secured a sensational pole position.
The additional penalty during the race further complicated Russell’s efforts to reduce the gap in the championship battle. With valuable points at stake, every setback carried extra importance as the season entered a critical phase.
A third driver, Franco Colapinto, was also punished for speeding in the pit lane. Like Hamilton and Russell, Colapinto received a five-second time penalty after breaching the speed limit during a pit stop.
The unusual number of pit lane speeding penalties caught the attention of commentators and fans alike. Sky Sports F1 analyst and former Formula 1 driver Martin Brundle suggested that there may have been changes to the positioning of the pit lane speed line or other factors contributing to the repeated infringements. Brundle remarked on the unusually high frequency of speeding violations, noting that it was rare to see multiple drivers penalized for the same offence in a single race.
