Breaking: Lewis Hamilton in a Ferrari at the Nurburgring? What comes next after Verstappen S…read more

Max Verstappen’s growing love affair with the legendary Nürburgring Nordschleife is being hailed as a major boost for the iconic circuit—and it could even tempt rivals like Lewis Hamilton to get involved in the future.

Nürburgring specialist Mischa Charoudin believes Verstappen’s recent appearance at the track represents what he calls the “third shockwave” in the venue’s modern history. Speaking after the latest NLS2 endurance race, Charoudin praised the Dutch driver’s enthusiasm and commitment, describing it as a significant win for the Nordschleife—regardless of the final race classification.

During the event, Verstappen once again demonstrated his immense skill. The four-time Formula 1 world champion secured pole position and led his team through an intense contest with Christopher Haase. Although Verstappen’s team ultimately lost their victory due to a disqualification for exceeding tyre limits, his performance still left a strong impression on fans and experts alike.

For Charoudin, Verstappen’s involvement is about more than results. He sees it as part of a broader pattern that has shaped the Nürburgring’s global reputation over time. The first major surge in popularity, he explains, came from Sabine Schmitz, whose unforgettable lap in a Ford Transit on Top Gear captured worldwide attention. At the time, the circuit functioned almost like a public toll road, where visitors could casually drive, park, and even picnic. That moment transformed it into a global phenomenon.

The second wave arrived in the late 2010s, driven largely by social media. Viral videos—especially dramatic crash clips—spread rapidly online, bringing a new generation of attention to the historic track and further cementing its reputation as one of the most challenging circuits in motorsport.

Now, Charoudin believes Verstappen has sparked a third era of popularity. Since the Dutchman began showing interest in the Nordschleife, there has been a noticeable surge in demand for track experiences, rental cars, and local accommodation. According to him, many new fans have discovered the Nürburgring purely because of Verstappen’s influence. As both a driver and entrepreneur, Verstappen is playing a key role in expanding the circuit’s global reach.

Charoudin also highlighted Verstappen’s attitude when he’s at the track, noting that despite his superstar status, he remains grounded and approachable. Rather than acting like a distant celebrity, he blends in with fellow drivers and actively supports opportunities for lesser-known racers to participate and develop.

Looking ahead, Verstappen’s presence could open the door for exciting new rivalries beyond Formula 1. Charoudin even floated the idea—half-jokingly—of seeing Hamilton take on the Nordschleife in a Ferrari, a prospect that would undoubtedly capture worldwide attention. More seriously, he suggested introducing a dedicated class for Formula 1 drivers in endurance racing, similar to existing SP9 categories.

If that vision becomes reality, the Nürburgring could soon host some of the biggest names in motorsport, turning Verstappen’s passion project into a new stage for elite racing talent.
