FIA Confirms Major Updates Ahead of Canadian Grand Prix Weekend
The FIA has officially confirmed a series of important developments ahead of the upcoming Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix, with new technical measures, regulatory evaluations and weekend format changes set to place Montreal firmly in the spotlight.
As Formula 1 continues its transition into the new 2026 era, the governing body has intensified efforts to monitor the performance and reliability of the sport’s latest regulations. The Canadian Grand Prix is now expected to become a key reference point for several ongoing FIA assessments.
Among the most significant confirmations is the continuation of enhanced safety and energy-management monitoring introduced earlier this season. FIA officials are expected to closely evaluate how teams manage the new-generation power units, particularly following growing concerns from drivers over excessive lift-and-coast racing and energy deployment limitations.
Several drivers and team representatives have reportedly expressed concerns that the current balance between electrical energy recovery and traditional combustion power could negatively affect wheel-to-wheel racing. The governing body has also confirmed that the new Additional Development and Upgrade Opportunities (ADUO) programme will officially begin following the Canadian Grand Prix weekend. In another major announcement, the FIA confirmed that the Canadian Grand Prix will feature the Sprint weekend format in 2026. The revised schedule will see Sprint qualifying take place on Friday, followed by the Sprint race and Grand Prix qualifying on Saturday before Sunday’s main event.
The change is expected to increase the competitive intensity of the Montreal weekend while also placing greater emphasis on strategy, reliability and tyre management across a compressed timetable.
Off-track preparations are also well underway, with FIA Formula 2 and F1 Academy both confirmed as support categories for the event. Their inclusion is expected to add further attention to one of Formula 1’s most historic venues.
Despite speculation surrounding possible investigations and regulatory concerns involving several teams, the FIA has not yet announced any major penalties or disciplinary actions ahead of the race weekend.
