Breaking: FIA confirms Penalties for Mercedes star at Miami Grand Prix following…read more

Kimi Antonelli endured a late twist at the Miami Grand Prix after a post-race penalty reshuffled the final Sprint standings.

The Mercedes youngster, who currently sits atop the Formula 1 championship, originally finished fourth after another impressive drive. He had crossed the line ahead of teammate George Russell, strengthening his position in the title fight. However, that result was later revised following a stewards’ review.

Race officials determined that Antonelli had exceeded track limits multiple times during the Sprint. As a consequence, he was handed a five-second time penalty, which dropped him from fourth to sixth in the final classification. This promoted both Russell and Max Verstappen up the order.

The penalty stemmed from repeated breaches of track limits regulations, which require drivers to keep part of their car within the white boundary lines. Earlier in the race, Antonelli had already been shown the black-and-white flag on lap 12—an official warning for repeated infringements.

Despite that caution, he went off track once more on the final lap, marking his fourth violation. Under FIA rules, this automatically resulted in a time penalty, which was added to his overall race time after the chequered flag.

The setback could have implications for the championship battle, where every point is critical. Dropping two positions in the Sprint may prove costly as the season unfolds.

For Mercedes, the outcome was bittersweet. While Russell benefited from the revised order, Antonelli’s demotion denied the team a stronger combined result. It also highlights how crucial precision is in modern Formula 1, where even small errors can carry significant consequences.

Going forward, Antonelli will need to manage track limits more carefully if he wants to maintain his lead in the standings and avoid further penalties.
