Christian Horner has been backed for a potential return to Formula 1, with Juan Pablo Montoya encouraging Audi to appoint him as team principal as the brand continues to shape its future in the sport.
Horner has been without a role since his departure from Red Bull Racing following last year’s British Grand Prix. Despite stepping away from the team he led for over two decades, his legacy remains significant. During his time in charge, Red Bull developed into a dominant force, securing multiple drivers’ and constructors’ championships under his leadership.
Even with such an impressive track record, Horner has yet to return to the F1 paddock. However, Montoya believes that should change soon—and sees Audi as the ideal destination. The German manufacturer is preparing for its Formula 1 future but currently finds itself in need of a permanent leader.
The situation follows the departure of Jonathan Wheatley, who is widely expected to join Aston Martin. In the meantime, Mattia Binotto has stepped in as a temporary team principal. However, Montoya suggested that Binotto may prefer a less public-facing role rather than taking full control of the team long-term.
As a result, Audi is likely to be exploring its options for a permanent appointment, and Montoya is convinced Horner would be the right choice. He emphasized that while Horner may divide opinion, his accomplishments in Formula 1 cannot be ignored.
Montoya highlighted that maintaining success over such a long period is rare in the sport, and Horner’s ability to consistently deliver results sets him apart. His experience in managing a top-level team, handling pressure, and building a winning structure could be exactly what Audi needs as it prepares to compete at the highest level.
Although Horner has been linked with other teams, including Alpine, no move has been confirmed. This leaves Audi with a clear opportunity to bring in a proven leader who understands what it takes to succeed in Formula 1.
With the team still in a crucial development phase, appointing the right figurehead will be key. If Montoya’s view carries weight, Horner could soon return to the grid in a leading role, guiding Audi through the challenges of establishing itself in Formula 1.
