Toto Wolff Calls Lawyers After FIA Changes Race Result Following Penalty… see details in the comment
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has confirmed that the team is seeking legal advice following the FIA’s controversial decision to overturn some of the penalties issued during the 2026 Monaco Grand Prix, a move that has reignited debate over the race’s final classification.
Although the Monaco race concluded nearly a week ago, the official results remain under scrutiny after questions emerged regarding the accuracy of the FIA’s pit-lane speed monitoring system. Several drivers received time penalties during the race for exceeding the 60 km/h pit-lane speed limit by extremely small margins, with some recorded at just 0.1 km/h over the threshold.
One of the drivers affected was George Russell, whose race was heavily compromised by the penalties. Russell initially received a five-second penalty for speeding in the pit lane. The situation worsened when the penalty was not served correctly, resulting in a drive-through penalty that dropped the Mercedes driver out of contention and ultimately left him finishing outside the points in 12th place.
The controversy escalated after the FIA reviewed a protest submitted by the Alpine team. The review revealed that part of the pit-lane speed measurement zone in Monaco had been incorrectly configured. According to the findings, the first timing sector was positioned 77 centimetres away from its required location, potentially affecting speed calculations and explaining why several drivers were recorded as marginally exceeding the limit.
As a result of the investigation, the FIA decided to cancel the penalties imposed on Pierre Gasly. The reversal restored Gasly’s podium finish, a result he had originally lost because of the sanctions. The decision immediately sparked reactions throughout the paddock, with rival teams questioning whether other drivers affected by similar penalties should also receive relief.
Both Red Bull Racing and McLaren Racing reportedly filed notices of intent to appeal following the FIA’s announcement. Mercedes has now joined the growing list of teams examining their options.
Speaking ahead of the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona, Wolff acknowledged that discussions are ongoing regarding Russell’s case. The Mercedes boss explained that he had recently been consulting with the team’s legal representatives to determine whether any action could be taken to address the consequences of the Monaco penalties.
Wolff expressed frustration that Russell’s race had been significantly affected by a ruling that is now being questioned. The penalty not only cost the British driver valuable championship points but also damaged his position in the title standings. Russell’s hopes of challenging teammate Kimi Antonelli for the championship lead suffered a setback, while rivals gained an advantage in the standings.
The ongoing dispute has placed the FIA under intense pressure as teams seek clarity over how the governing body intends to handle the fallout from the measurement error. With multiple teams exploring legal and sporting avenues, the Monaco Grand Prix controversy is far from over.
As Formula 1 heads into another race weekend, attention remains focused not only on the track but also on whether further changes to the Monaco results could still occur, potentially reshaping both race outcomes and the championship battle.
