Ferrari Legend Jean Todt Once Hid in Bathroom During Hotel Break…. read more 👇 details in the comments section
A hilarious story from Formula One’s past has resurfaced after former team boss Otmar Szafnauer shared an unforgettable incident involving two iconic Ferrari figures — Jean Todt and Gerhard Berger.
Todt, who played a major role in Ferrari’s dominance during the early 2000s, served as the team’s general manager from 1994 to 2007 before later becoming CEO and eventually president of the FIA. He was one of the key people responsible for bringing Michael Schumacher to Ferrari, a move that transformed the Italian team into an unstoppable force. Together, Schumacher and Ferrari claimed five consecutive world championships between 2000 and 2004.
But long before those championship celebrations, Ferrari had already begun rebuilding itself in the mid-1990s. One of the team’s early highlights came at the 1994 German Grand Prix when Gerhard Berger secured Ferrari’s first race victory in four years. Berger became a fan favorite during his time with the Scuderia, earning several podium finishes and establishing himself as one of the sport’s most entertaining personalities.
Years later, Szafnauer revealed a funny behind-the-scenes story involving Berger and Todt during an appearance on the High Performance Podcast. According to Szafnauer, the incident happened during a past Italian Grand Prix weekend at Monza, although he admitted he did not witness it personally and only heard about it from others.
The story began late at night at a small hotel where Berger was staying. Berger had somehow locked himself out of his hotel room and could not get back inside. Since it was already around 1:30 in the morning and the hotel owners could not be reached, he contacted a friend and asked for help.
When the friend arrived, Berger pointed toward what he believed was his room. With the hotel doors locked and no staff available, the pair decided to climb up onto the balcony from outside the building in an attempt to break back into the room.
Szafnauer explained that Berger and his friend even grabbed a crowbar from a van and started trying to force the window open. As they struggled with it, the glass suddenly shattered. It was only at that moment that Berger realized something had gone terribly wrong.
They had targeted the wrong room.
Instead of breaking into Berger’s room, they had accidentally smashed the window of Jean Todt’s hotel room.
The podcast’s co-hosts burst into laughter as Szafnauer continued telling the story. Former Ferrari engineer Rob Smedley joked that Todt was probably the last person anyone would want to accidentally scare in such a situation.
Inside the room, Todt reportedly believed that criminals were attempting to break in. Awakened by the sound of smashing glass in the middle of the night, he panicked and rushed to hide in the bathroom, locking himself inside for safety.
The image of Ferrari’s famously serious and disciplined boss hiding in a hotel bathroom while one of his own drivers accidentally tried to break into his room made the story even funnier.
Podcast host Jake Humphrey then jokingly wondered whether Todt had ever discovered the truth behind the mysterious “break-in.” Szafnauer humorously responded that Todt would probably find out only after hearing the story shared publicly on the podcast.
The incident perfectly captured Berger’s reputation as one of Formula One’s biggest pranksters and most carefree personalities. Throughout his career, Berger was known for bringing humor and chaos to the paddock, often pulling practical jokes on fellow drivers and team members.
While Ferrari’s history is filled with championship triumphs, intense rivalries, and legendary moments, stories like this offer fans a lighter glimpse into life behind the scenes in Formula One. Even some of the sport’s most respected figures can end up at the center of bizarre and unforgettable moments.
