George Russell faces FIA wrath after Canadian Grand Prix tantrum
George Russell could be facing further trouble with the FIA after his emotional reaction during a dramatic and painful retirement at the 2026 Canadian Grand Prix. What had started as one of his strongest weekends of the season quickly turned into frustration and controversy after a sudden mechanical failure ended his race while he was leading in Montreal.
The Canadian Grand Prix had already delivered intense action between Russell and his Mercedes teammate scene.
That emotional outburst may now create another headache for the Mercedes star. FIA stewards reportedly summoned Russell over a possible breach of the International Sporting Code linked to his behaviour after the retirement. While full details of the investigation are still developing, the governing body is believed to be reviewing whether his conduct crossed the line expected from Formula 1 drivers during an official race situation.
The incident only adds to Russell’s growing frustration during the 2026 season. Despite showing excellent pace all weekend, including an incredible fight with Antonelli, he once again lost valuable championship points through circumstances outside his control. Russell later admitted he was left in “disbelief” by the retirement and even suggested it felt like something was stopping him from properly fighting for the title this year.
Meanwhile, Antonelli went on to win the race and extend his advantage in the championship standings. The young Italian has now won four races in a row, increasing the pressure on Russell inside the Mercedes garage. Their rivalry has become one of the biggest talking points in Formula 1, especially after several tense moments between them during both the sprint and the Grand Prix itself.
Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff now faces the difficult challenge of managing two highly competitive drivers while also keeping tensions under control. With emotions already running high after the Canadian weekend, the FIA investigation into Russell’s post-race behaviour could become another major storyline heading into the next round of the championship.
