FIA Summons George Russell After Canadian Grand Prix Incident
George Russell has reportedly been summoned by FIA stewards following an emotional incident after his dramatic retirement from the 2026 Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal.
The Mercedes driver had been locked in a thrilling battle for victory with teammate and championship rival Kimi Antonelli before disaster struck midway through the race. Russell, who started from pole position, was forced to pull over on lap 30 after suffering what Mercedes later described as a power unit failure.
Moments after climbing from the car, Russell appeared visibly furious, with reports claiming the Briton threw cockpit equipment in frustration as his hopes of victory disappeared. The incident quickly drew the attention of FIA officials, with multiple outlets confirming that the Mercedes star was later summoned by race stewards.
The retirement proved costly in the championship fight. Antonelli went on to secure his fourth consecutive Formula One victory, extending his lead at the top of the standings to 43 points.
Despite the emotional scenes, Russell refused to give up on his title ambitions after the race. Speaking following the heartbreak in Montreal, the British driver admitted he was “lost for words” after another setback in what has become an increasingly tense season for Mercedes.
The FIA has not yet officially confirmed whether Russell will receive any further punishment over the incident. At this stage, no grid penalty, fine, or disqualification has been announced.
The Canadian Grand Prix weekend was already packed with tension inside Mercedes, following aggressive wheel-to-wheel battles between Russell and Antonelli during both the sprint race and Sunday’s main event.

While emotions ran high after Russell’s retirement, Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff later confirmed the issue was mechanical rather than driver-related, ending what had looked set to become one of the most intense intra-team battles of the 2026 season.
