Mercedes are preparing to strike back at the Canadian Grand Prix with a significant upgrade package for their W17, as the Silver Arrows aim to strengthen their grip on both Formula 1 championships amid increasing pressure from their rivals.
After a dominant start to the 2026 season, Mercedes suddenly found themselves under greater threat in Miami, where rivals Ferrari, McLaren and Red Bull all introduced major developments following a lengthy five-week break in the calendar. Among those challengers, McLaren appeared to make the biggest leap forward.
The British outfit delivered an impressive performance throughout the Miami weekend, securing a one-two finish in the sprint race before following it up with a strong two-three result in the grand prix itself. Their pace allowed them to finish ahead of Mercedes driver George Russell in both contests, further intensifying the championship battle and reinforcing McLaren’s status as Mercedes’ closest competitor heading into Montreal.
Now, with Formula 1 arriving at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve for the fifth round of the campaign, Mercedes are ready to respond. Team principal Toto Wolff confirmed that the Brackley-based squad will debut its first major upgrade package of the season at the Canadian Grand Prix.
Wolff stressed that while Mercedes remain confident in their direction, the team are fully aware that their competitors have narrowed the gap considerably in recent weeks. He explained that the upcoming run of seven races across 10 weekends presents a crucial opportunity for Mercedes to regain momentum and create separation at the top of the standings.
Despite the excitement surrounding the new upgrades, Wolff remained cautious in his assessment, insisting that improvements on paper only matter if they deliver results on track. He also reminded fans and critics alike that the season is still in its early stages, with only four races completed despite the calendar already approaching mid-May.
Mercedes currently lead the constructors’ championship and remain heavily involved in the fight for the drivers’ crown, but the competition behind them is rapidly intensifying. Ferrari continue to chase consistency, Red Bull are searching for a breakthrough, and McLaren’s recent surge has added another serious contender to the mix.
With fresh upgrades arriving in Montreal and rivals closing in fast, the Canadian Grand Prix could mark a pivotal moment in the early stages of the 2026 Formula 1 season.
