Ferrari hit with FIA penalty drama at Miami Grand Prix
Ferrari endured a turbulent weekend at the Miami Grand Prix after the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) handed down penalties involving the Italian team, most notably affecting driver Charles Leclerc’s final race result.
The most significant sanction came after the race, when stewards penalised Leclerc for repeated track limit violations during a chaotic closing lap. The Monegasque driver had initially crossed the line in sixth position after a competitive showing that saw him battling front-runners such as Max Verstappen and George Russell. However, a late incident altered the outcome.
Leclerc spun at Turn 3 on the final lap and ran off track multiple times while trying to regain control of his car. Although he managed to continue and finish the race, stewards investigated whether he had gained an advantage by leaving the circuit. After reviewing the situation, officials ruled that he had breached regulations by repeatedly exceeding track limits without justification.
As a result, Leclerc received a post-race drive-through penalty, which was converted into a 20-second time penalty. The decision dropped him from sixth to eighth place in the final classification, significantly reducing Ferrari’s points haul. In the context of a tightly contested championship battle, the lost points could prove costly.
Stewards also reviewed an earlier on-track clash between Leclerc and Russell but determined that no further action was necessary, classifying the contact as a racing incident. However, the repeated off-track excursions were deemed sufficient grounds for disciplinary action.
Leclerc later admitted fault, describing the incident as frustrating and acknowledging that the mistake was his. His demotion highlighted how small errors can have major consequences in modern Formula One, where margins are extremely fine.
The penalty added to a weekend already marked by FIA scrutiny of Ferrari. Earlier in the event, the team was fined after Leclerc exceeded the pit lane speed limit during a practice session. While the infringement was minor and carried no sporting penalty, it contributed to an uneasy weekend for the team.
Despite the setbacks, Ferrari demonstrated encouraging pace throughout the Miami event. Leclerc had been in contention for a strong finish before the late-race error, and the team appeared capable of challenging rivals including Mercedes and McLaren.
The race itself produced a mix of excitement and controversy, with several drivers facing investigations and penalties. Verstappen, for example, received a five-second penalty for a pit exit violation, underscoring the strict enforcement of regulations throughout the weekend.
For Ferrari, the Miami Grand Prix ultimately became a story of missed opportunity. The team showed flashes of competitiveness but failed to convert performance into maximum points due to a combination of penalties and driver error.
As the Formula One season progresses, Ferrari will need to improve consistency and reduce mistakes if they are to remain competitive against their closest rivals.
