Kimi Antonelli endured a frustrating twist to an otherwise solid Miami Grand Prix Sprint weekend after a post-race penalty reshuffled the final results.
The Mercedes rookie, who currently leads the drivers’ championship in the Formula 1 season, originally crossed the line in fourth place following another composed and competitive performance. He had also managed to finish ahead of his experienced teammate, George Russell, underlining his growing confidence at the top level. However, that result did not stand for long.
After the race, stewards reviewed Antonelli’s conduct and found that he had exceeded track limits on multiple occasions during the Sprint. As a consequence, officials handed the young Italian a five-second time penalty, which was applied to his final race time. This sanction dropped him from fourth down to sixth place in the revised classification.
The decision had a direct impact on the order behind him, promoting both Russell and Max Verstappen up one position each. While it provided a boost for his rivals, it marked a costly outcome for Antonelli in what is shaping up to be a tightly contested title fight.
The penalty stemmed from repeated breaches of track limits regulations, which require drivers to keep at least part of their car within the white lines at all times. Antonelli had already been shown the black-and-white flag earlier in the race—specifically on lap 12—serving as an official warning for prior infringements. Despite that caution, he ran wide again on the final lap, marking his fourth violation and automatically triggering a penalty under FIA rules.
This late setback could prove significant in the championship battle, where even minor points swings can influence the final standings. Dropping two positions in the Sprint may not seem dramatic in isolation, but over the course of a long season, such losses can add up quickly.
For Mercedes, the outcome was something of a mixed bag. While Russell benefited from the amended results, Antonelli’s demotion limited the team’s overall haul. It also highlighted the fine margins in modern Formula 1, where precision and discipline are just as important as outright pace.
