George Russell has reflected on the moment he believes played a decisive role in securing his long-awaited promotion from Williams to Mercedes, describing his standout performance at the 2020 Sakhir Grand Prix as a career-defining opportunity.
Russell spent three seasons racing for Williams after making his Formula 1 debut, consistently earning praise despite driving one of the least competitive cars on the grid. While results were often difficult to come by, the British driver built a strong reputation through his speed, determination, and impressive qualifying performances.
His big opportunity arrived in late 2020 when Lewis Hamilton was forced to miss the Sakhir Grand Prix after testing positive for COVID-19. Mercedes called upon Russell to step into the championship-winning W11 for a one-off appearance, giving him the chance to prove himself in the sport’s dominant car.
The young Brit immediately impressed. After qualifying near the front, Russell quickly established himself as one of the fastest drivers on track and appeared destined to claim a remarkable maiden Formula 1 victory.
