Late FIA Disqualification/Penalty Changes Barcelona GP Result After Post-Race Review
The final classification of the 2026 Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix was changed after a late FIA decision following a post-race investigation. Alpine driver Franco Colapinto, who originally finished eighth on track, was handed a 10-second time penalty for a yellow-flag infringement. The decision dropped him two places to tenth in the official results.
The stewards ruled that Colapinto did not reduce his speed sufficiently in a yellow-flag sector during the race. Although the Alpine driver showed some reaction to the warning, the FIA determined that it was not enough to fully comply with the regulations. A penalty point was also added to his record.
The late penalty promoted Racing Bulls’ Liam Lawson to eighth place and Arvid Lindblad to ninth, reshaping the final points positions after the chequered flag.
The updated Barcelona GP classification became:
Lewis Hamilton — Ferrari
George Russell — Mercedes
Lando Norris — McLaren
Max Verstappen — Red Bull
Oscar Piastri — McLaren
Isack Hadjar — Red Bull
Pierre Gasly — Alpine
Liam Lawson — Racing Bulls
Arvid Lindblad — Racing Bulls
Franco Colapinto — Alpine (after penalty)
Gabriel Bortoleto — Audi
Carlos Sainz — Williams
Esteban Ocon — Haas
Sergio Perez — Cadillac
Charles Leclerc — Ferrari (DNF)
Kimi Antonelli — Mercedes (DNF)
Oliver Bearman — Haas (DNF)
The incident once again showed how Formula 1 results can change even after the race has ended, with FIA investigations having the power to alter championship points and official standings. For Colapinto and Alpine, what looked like a strong points finish turned into a disappointing result after the late ruling.
