The 2026 Formula 1 season has taken an exciting turn, and Mercedes youngster Kimi Antonelli has openly admitted that Ferrari currently possess an important advantage over his team. Interestingly, according to the Italian driver, that advantage is not outright speed but something far more valuable in a championship battle.
Mercedes have enjoyed a competitive campaign so far, with Antonelli and his teammate George Russell regularly fighting near the front of the grid. For much of the season, the title fight appeared to be a straight contest between the two Mercedes drivers. However, recent events have changed the landscape dramatically, largely due to the impressive resurgence of Ferrari and seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton.
Hamilton’s recent performances have been exceptional. The British driver has consistently delivered strong results, finishing second in two consecutive grands prix before securing a dominant victory at the Spanish Grand Prix held at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. That victory not only marked another significant achievement in Hamilton’s legendary career but also firmly placed him back into the championship conversation.
Following Ferrari’s remarkable run of form, Antonelli was asked to assess the differences between Mercedes and Ferrari. While many observers might assume Ferrari’s recent success is purely down to having a faster car, Antonelli offered a different perspective. He suggested that Ferrari’s greatest strength lies in their ability to maximize opportunities and operate consistently at the highest level during race weekends.
According to Antonelli, Mercedes have shown that they possess the raw pace required to compete with Ferrari. The team has demonstrated strong qualifying performances and race speed throughout the season. However, he believes that Ferrari currently have a superior ability to execute every aspect of a race weekend more effectively.
This advantage can be seen in several areas, including race strategy, tire management, pit-stop execution, and the ability to make the correct decisions under pressure. While these factors may not attract as much attention as outright speed, they often make the difference between winning and losing in Formula 1.
Ferrari’s recent success highlights how crucial consistency can be in a championship challenge. Rather than relying solely on having the fastest car, the Italian team have repeatedly put themselves in the best possible position to score maximum points. Their ability to avoid mistakes and capitalize on every opportunity has allowed Hamilton to close the gap to the Mercedes drivers in the standings.
Antonelli’s comments also reflect the maturity of a driver who understands the complexities of modern Formula 1. Success is rarely determined by speed alone. Teams must excel in strategy, communication, reliability, and operational efficiency. Ferrari’s recent performances suggest they are currently achieving that balance more effectively than Mercedes.
As the championship battle continues, Mercedes will undoubtedly work to address the areas highlighted by Antonelli. The team remains one of the strongest outfits on the grid and possesses the resources and expertise necessary to respond to Ferrari’s challenge. However, with Hamilton carrying significant momentum and Ferrari operating at a remarkably high level, the title race is becoming increasingly competitive.
The coming races will reveal whether Mercedes can close the gap in execution and consistency. If they succeed, Antonelli and Russell could regain control of the championship fight. If not, Ferrari and Hamilton may continue their impressive surge and transform what once appeared to be a Mercedes-dominated season into one of the most thrilling title battles in recent Formula 1 history.
