FIA Hands Out Post-Race Penalty, Driver Drops Two Positions After Spanish Grand Prix
The FIA has confirmed a post-race penalty on Franco Colapinto (Alpine)   following the Spanish Grand Prix, with the decision affecting the final classification after the stewards completed their review.
The driver was handed a 10-second time penalty after the conclusion of the race following an investigation into an on-track incident. FIA officials examined the situation and determined that the rules had been breached, resulting in a time sanction being added to the driver’s final race result.
The penalty had a direct impact on the standings, with the driver losing two places in the official classification. After initially finishing the race in eighth position, the added 10 seconds dropped the driver down to 10th place once the revised results were applied.
The post-race decision highlights the importance of FIA regulations and how penalties can significantly change the outcome even after the chequered flag has fallen. In Formula 1, stewards continue reviewing incidents after races, and any findings can alter championship points and finishing positions.
The team and driver accepted the FIA’s ruling as the final classification was updated, bringing an end to the investigation. While the penalty did not result in disqualification, it proved costly by reducing the number of points gained from the Spanish Grand Prix.
The incident serves as another reminder of how closely contested modern Formula 1 has become, where small margins and steward decisions can have a major effect on the final race results. Teams will now shift their focus to the next round of the championship, aiming to avoid further setbacks and maximize their performance on track.
