Ferrari secures his first full-distance victory in red as strategy, pace and late drama help him conquer Mercedes duo George Russell and Kimi Antonelli in Spain.
Lewis Hamilton finally delivered the moment Ferrari fans had been waiting for, storming to a sensational victory at the Barcelona Grand Prix and ending a 686-day Formula 1 win drought in emphatic fashion.
The seven-time world champion produced a masterclass of race management, tyre preservation and outright speed to claim his first full-length grand prix victory since joining Ferrari. In doing so, Hamilton secured the Scuderia’s first race win since Carlos Sainz’s triumph at the 2024 Mexican Grand Prix and etched his name even deeper into Formula 1 history.
Starting from the front of the grid battle, Hamilton appeared locked in a tense strategic contest with Mercedes drivers George Russell and championship leader Kimi Antonelli. However, the race turned decisively in Ferrari’s favour when a Virtual Safety Car was triggered on lap 40 following Fernando Alonso’s retirement at Turn 9.
Ferrari’s Perfect Strategic Gamble
The timing could not have been better for Ferrari.
Hamilton was brought into the pits under Virtual Safety Car conditions on lap 42, allowing him to make a significantly cheaper stop than his rivals. The Briton rejoined the race still in contention for the lead and quickly capitalised as the neutralisation ended.
From that point onward, Hamilton was untouchable.
Running on the hard compound tyres, the Ferrari driver steadily pulled away from Russell and the chasing pack, with Mercedes unable to find an answer to his relentless pace around the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.
By the chequered flag, Hamilton had built a commanding advantage of almost 20 seconds over Russell.
Mercedes’ Challenge Unravels
Russell had entered Sunday’s race determined to bounce back after a difficult Monaco weekend and looked capable of mounting a serious challenge.
The Mercedes driver eventually secured second place, but the race proved far more frustrating for team-mate Antonelli.
The Italian rookie spent much of the afternoon battling Russell before suffering damage to his front-right tyre during an intense fight between the pair. Matters worsened dramatically on lap 62 when Antonelli’s power unit suddenly failed, forcing him to retire and triggering another Virtual Safety Car.
It marked the first time since the Australian Grand Prix that Russell had finished ahead of his young team-mate.
More Heartbreak for Ferrari
While Hamilton celebrated one of the most important victories of his Ferrari career, the race ended in disappointment for Charles Leclerc.
The Monegasque driver suffered a power steering failure late in the race and was forced to retire, denying Ferrari the opportunity to secure a potentially dominant double-points finish.
Leclerc’s latest setback continues a frustrating campaign that has been punctuated by reliability issues and missed opportunities.
Historic Day for Hamilton
The victory was significant on multiple levels.
Hamilton not only secured his first win in Ferrari colours but also recorded his seventh career victory at Barcelona, moving clear of the legendary in the circuit’s all-time winners list.
The triumph also extended Hamilton’s all-time Formula 1 record to 106 grand prix victories and delivered an emotional milestone in what has been a challenging adaptation period since his blockbuster switch from to .
Meanwhile, reigning world champion salvaged an underwhelming weekend for McLaren by finishing third, completing an all-British podium alongside Hamilton and Russell—the first such podium in Formula 1 since 1968.
