Dejected George Russell declares F1 title ‘out of reach’
George Russell has admitted that his hopes of winning the 2026 Formula 1 World Championship are slipping away, describing the title fight as effectively “out of reach” after a difficult run of races that has left him trailing his Mercedes teammate, Kimi Antonelli, by a significant margin.
The British driver began the season as one of the favourites for the championship after a strong opening victory in Australia. At the time, many expected Russell and Mercedes to mount a serious challenge for both the Drivers’ and Constructors’ titles. However, a series of setbacks, reliability problems, and missed opportunities have dramatically altered the picture.
Russell’s latest disappointment came at the Monaco Grand Prix, where a combination of penalties and race misfortune left him without any points. The result proved particularly damaging because Antonelli continued his remarkable run of form, securing another victory and extending his lead in the championship standings. Following the race, the gap between the two Mercedes drivers grew to 68 points, a deficit Russell now views as extremely difficult to overcome.

Rather than focusing on the title, he suggested that his priority now is to enjoy racing and maximize results whenever opportunities arise. The Mercedes driver admitted that the championship battle currently appears to be firmly in Antonelli’s hands.
The frustration is understandable given how the season has unfolded. Russell has endured several costly setbacks, including a retirement while leading in Canada due to a power-unit failure and a chaotic Monaco weekend where penalties and operational mistakes ruined any chance of a strong finish. Those incidents alone have cost him a substantial number of points and transformed what once looked like a close championship battle into an uphill struggle.
Meanwhile, Antonelli has emerged as the standout performer of the season. The 19-year-old Italian has won five consecutive Grands Prix and continues to break records as Formula 1’s newest superstar. His consistency, combined with Mercedes’ strong package, has allowed him to establish a commanding lead over the rest of the field.
Russell has also spoken openly about his difficulties adapting to certain characteristics of the current Mercedes car. While Antonelli appears perfectly suited to the machine, Russell has admitted that he has struggled to unlock the same level of performance, particularly during qualifying sessions. The contrast between the teammates has become increasingly evident over recent race weekends.
Despite his pessimistic assessment of the championship situation, Russell has not completely given up on the remainder of the season. With many races still to come, he knows that Formula 1 can change quickly and that momentum can swing unexpectedly. Nevertheless, he recognizes that recovering such a large points deficit against a teammate driving identical machinery will be one of the toughest challenges of his career.
For now, the momentum belongs entirely to Antonelli. While Russell remains determined to fight for victories and podiums, his latest comments reveal the reality of the championship battle: barring a dramatic turnaround, Mercedes’ rising young star appears to have one hand firmly on the 2026 Formula 1 crown.
