F1 Team Principal Starting to Question Whether He Should Keep Driver After Poor Start

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff is reportedly beginning to question the future of George Russell at the Silver Arrows after a difficult start to the 2026 Formula 1 season that has seen rookie sensation Kimi Antonelli emerge as the dominant force within the team.

Just six races into the campaign, the Formula 1 championship picture is already beginning to take shape, and it is Antonelli who has become the story of the season. The young Italian has stunned the paddock by winning five consecutive Grands Prix after teammate Russell claimed victory in the season-opening Australian Grand Prix.

When the season began, most observers expected Russell to lead the Mercedes charge while Antonelli learned the ropes during his first full Formula 1 campaign. Instead, the opposite has happened. Antonelli has rapidly established himself as the championship favourite and currently sits comfortably at the top of the standings with an impressive 156 points.

Russell, meanwhile, has collected 88 points during the opening six rounds. While that total would normally represent a respectable start to a season, it pales in comparison to the remarkable form displayed by his younger teammate.

The contrast between the two drivers has become increasingly difficult to ignore. Antonelli has delivered victory after victory while Russell has struggled to consistently challenge him despite driving identical machinery.

The Italian’s latest triumph came on the streets of Monaco, one of Formula 1’s most demanding circuits. Winning in Monte Carlo is often considered a career-defining achievement for any driver, making Antonelli’s fifth consecutive victory even more significant.

While Mercedes continue to dominate at the front, Ferrari have emerged as their closest challengers. Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc have regularly delivered strong performances for the Scuderia, ensuring the Italian team remains within touching distance in both championships.

Elsewhere, however, the competitive picture has been less encouraging for some of Formula 1’s biggest names. McLaren and Red Bull have struggled to maintain the pace required to challenge Mercedes consistently, while teams such as Aston Martin, Cadillac, and Audi have endured a particularly frustrating start to the season.

Those three constructors have managed only three points between them despite fielding experienced drivers including Fernando Alonso, Sergio Perez, Valtteri Bottas, Nico Hulkenberg, and Lance Stroll. Their struggles have highlighted just how important car performance remains in modern Formula 1.

Against this backdrop, attention has increasingly turned toward Mercedes and the growing gap between its two drivers.

According to journalist Bianca Garloff, speaking on the F1 Insider podcast following the Monaco Grand Prix, Wolff may already be questioning whether Russell remains the ideal long-term partner for Antonelli.

“Anyone who racks up five wins in a row, whether in a dominant car or not, is simply something special, and George Russell sees that too,” Garloff explained.

“He’ll also feel the pressure Mercedes is putting on him.

“There are also those question marks in Toto Wolff’s mind as to whether George Russell is still the right man for the job as co-pilot to the star driver, Antonelli.”

The comments have intensified speculation surrounding Russell’s future. The British driver has long been viewed as one of Formula 1’s leading talents and was expected to become Mercedes’ team leader following the departure of Lewis Hamilton to Ferrari.

However, Antonelli’s extraordinary rise has dramatically altered the internal dynamics at the Brackley-based team.

Reports have also suggested that performance-related clauses within Russell’s contract could potentially place his future at risk if results do not improve. While such claims remain unconfirmed, they have added another layer of uncertainty to an already challenging situation.

Adding further intrigue is the continued speculation surrounding Max Verstappen’s future. The reigning multiple-time world champion has repeatedly been linked with a possible move away from Red Bull, and Mercedes have frequently been mentioned as a potential destination.

Should Verstappen become available at the end of the season, Mercedes would undoubtedly face a difficult decision regarding its driver lineup.

For Russell, the solution is simple: performance.

The 28-year-old still has the talent, experience, and speed to prove he belongs at the front of Formula 1. However, with Antonelli currently producing championship-winning performances on a weekly basis, time may be running short for Russell to re-establish himself as Mercedes’ leading contender.

The upcoming races could therefore prove crucial not only for the championship battle but also for Russell’s long-term future with one of Formula 1’s most successful teams.

As Antonelli continues his remarkable winning streak and strengthens his grip on the Drivers’ Championship, all eyes will be on Russell to see whether he can respond and silence the growing doubts surrounding his place at Mercedes.
