The FIA stewards have had their eyes on George Russell and Mercedes, with a punishment coming their way after FP1 at the Monaco Grand Prix.
Mercedes found itself in trouble with Formula 1’s governing body during the opening day of action at the Monaco Grand Prix after George Russell was caught exceeding the pit lane speed limit in Friday’s first practice session.
While teams focused on gathering crucial data around the iconic streets of Monte Carlo, the FIA confirmed that Russell had breached pit lane regulations, resulting in a financial penalty for the Brackley-based outfit.
FIA Punishes Mercedes Over Russell’s Monaco Practice Violation
According to an official FIA statement, Russell was found to be in breach of Article B1.6.3a of the FIA Formula 1 Sporting Regulations after exceeding the pit lane speed limit during FP1.
The speed limit for the Monaco Grand Prix weekend is set at 60 km/h, one of the strict safety measures enforced throughout the season. FIA data showed that Russell reached a speed of 60.3 km/h while travelling through the pit lane.
Although the infringement was minimal, Formula 1 regulations leave little room for tolerance. As a result, Mercedes received a €100 fine from the stewards. No sporting penalty was issued to Russell, allowing the British driver to continue the weekend unaffected on track.
Mercedes Faces Tough Competition in Monaco
The incident came during an intriguing opening practice session that suggested Mercedes may not enjoy the same level of dominance seen at previous rounds.
Ferrari star Charles Leclerc delighted the home crowd by topping the timing sheets in FP1, while Lewis Hamilton secured second place to underline Ferrari’s early pace around the tight and demanding street circuit.
Red Bull’s Max Verstappen also looked competitive, finishing third fastest, while Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli ended the session in fourth. Russell completed the top five despite the pit lane infringement.
With the field appearing closely matched, the battle for pole position is shaping up to be one of the most competitive of the season.
Why Pit Lane Speed Limits Matter
Pit lane speed restrictions are designed to ensure the safety of team personnel, officials, and drivers operating in confined spaces. Even minor breaches are monitored electronically and automatically reviewed by race control.
Although Russell exceeded the limit by just 0.3 km/h, FIA regulations require penalties to be applied consistently, regardless of the margin involved.
