F1 Stars Summoned by FIA Stewards Over Unusual Monaco Grand Prix Rule Breach

Lando Norris and Charles Leclerc face scrutiny after allegedly arriving late to official FIA media commitments in Monte Carlo

The Monaco Grand Prix weekend has barely begun, yet two of Formula 1’s biggest names have already found themselves under FIA scrutiny after being summoned by stewards over an unusual procedural breach.

Reigning world champion Lando Norris and hometown hero Charles Leclerc have been called to appear before FIA officials on Friday morning following an alleged violation of Formula 1’s media regulations during the prestigious Monaco race weekend.

According to the FIA summons, both drivers are suspected of breaching Article B10.1.1a of the governing body’s sporting regulations. The rule requires all participants to attend official media activities and press conferences at the designated times, with punctual attendance considered a mandatory part of a driver’s race weekend obligations.

Late for Media Duties

On Thursday in Monte Carlo, Leclerc and Norris were scheduled to participate in the first official media session of the weekend.

The Ferrari star was expected to attend at 10:00am local time, while the McLaren driver was due to appear ten minutes later. However, both drivers are now under investigation after allegedly failing to meet those requirements on time.

While such incidents rarely generate major headlines in Formula 1, Monaco’s high-profile status and the involvement of two of the sport’s most recognisable figures have drawn significant attention in the paddock.

What Penalty Could They Face?

Historically, FIA investigations into late arrivals for media sessions have resulted in relatively minor sanctions.

Drivers found in breach of media obligations are typically handed an official warning, reprimand, or in some cases a small fine. Sporting penalties affecting qualifying or race results are considered highly unlikely unless aggravating circumstances are identified.

That will come as a relief for Norris, who arrives in Monaco aiming to strengthen his championship challenge, and for Leclerc, who once again carries the hopes of the local crowd on the streets where he grew up.

Awkward Start to a Crucial Weekend

For Leclerc, the summons creates an awkward distraction ahead of one of the most important weekends on the calendar. The Monegasque driver traditionally faces enormous pressure racing in front of his home supporters, making any off-track controversy particularly unwelcome.

Norris, meanwhile, is seeking another strong result around the iconic Monte Carlo circuit after previous success in the principality. While the FIA hearing is unlikely to have any major competitive consequences, it adds an unexpected subplot to a weekend already packed with championship intrigue.

With both drivers scheduled to meet the stewards before track action intensifies, Formula 1 now awaits the FIA’s verdict on what may ultimately prove to be one of the more unusual steward investigations of the 2026 season.
