Racing Driver Faces Swiss Court Trial Over Alleged Assault at Schumacher Family Residence
Australian racing driver Joey Mawson has appeared before a court in Switzerland to face serious allegations relating to an incident that allegedly took place at the family home of seven-time Formula 1 world champion Michael Schumacher in Gland, near Geneva. Mawson, 30, has denied all accusations against him and maintains that any interaction between himself and the woman involved was consensual.
The case centres on events said to have occurred in November 2019 while Mawson was visiting the Schumacher family estate. The Australian driver had previously raced alongside Schumacher’s son, Mick Schumacher, during their junior motorsport careers and was known to have visited the family property on several occasions.
According to prosecutors, the complainant was a nurse who formed part of the medical team responsible for Schumacher’s ongoing care following the German legend’s life-changing skiing accident in 2013. Court documents allege that after a social gathering involving several people at the residence, the woman became unwell and was helped to bed after consuming alcohol. Prosecutors claim that Mawson later returned to the room and sexually assaulted her while she was unconscious.
The woman reportedly stated that she had no recollection of the alleged incident and only became concerned after waking the following morning and discovering signs that suggested sexual activity had taken place. Medical examinations were later said to have identified injuries that formed part of the prosecution’s evidence. The allegations were formally reported to authorities in 2022, several years after the incident allegedly occurred.
During proceedings in Nyon, Mawson rejected the accusations and insisted that the encounter was consensual. His defence team has argued that the prosecution’s version of events is inconsistent with the evidence and has challenged elements of the complainant’s account. Mawson also acknowledged sending apologetic text messages after the night in question but denied that the messages amounted to an admission of guilt.
The Schumacher family is not accused of any wrongdoing and is not directly involved in the legal proceedings. Reports indicate that no members of the family were present during the alleged incident. The trial is continuing in Switzerland, with a verdict expected following the conclusion of the hearings.
