F1 Canadian Grand Prix 2026 results confirmed after FIA penalties shake up final classification
By Hugo Harvey
The FIA has officially confirmed the final classification for the 2026 Canadian Grand Prix after a dramatic evening of steward investigations and post-race reviews at the iconic Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.
Round five of the 2026 Formula 1 season delivered another major statement from Mercedes sensation Kimi Antonelli, who stormed to his fourth consecutive victory to further tighten his grip on the world championship battle. The 19-year-old Italian continued his astonishing rise by taking advantage of reliability heartbreak for team-mate George Russell, who had looked set to challenge for victory before suffering terminal issues during the race.
Antonelli’s latest triumph cements his status as the standout driver of the 2026 campaign so far, with Mercedes now appearing firmly in control heading into the European leg of the season.
The Canadian Grand Prix also produced a memorable podium battle involving some of Formula 1’s biggest names. Lewis Hamilton delivered his strongest Ferrari result yet by finishing second after a decisive late-race move on Max Verstappen with just six laps remaining.
Hamilton’s aggressive but clean overtake proved crucial as the seven-time world champion secured Ferrari’s best result of the year and continued building momentum in his first season with the Scuderia. Verstappen, meanwhile, had to settle for third place after struggling to defend against Hamilton’s superior pace in the closing stages.
Ferrari also celebrated a strong afternoon thanks to Charles Leclerc, who crossed the line in fourth after a relatively quiet but consistent race. While Leclerc lacked the pace to challenge the podium fight ahead, the result marked an important haul of points for Ferrari in the constructors’ standings.
Behind the leading quartet, Isack Hadjar impressed once again for Red Bull by taking fifth place ahead of Alpine rookie Franco Colapinto and Racing Bulls driver Liam Lawson.
Alpine enjoyed a productive race overall, with Pierre Gasly also finishing in the points, while Carlos Sainz added another top-10 finish for Williams.
One of the standout stories from the weekend, however, was the disastrous strategy call from McLaren. In a race where rain never arrived, the team gambled on intermediate tyres at the start, a decision that immediately backfired.
The strategic error completely ruined the afternoon for both McLaren drivers. Lando Norris eventually retired from the race, while championship contender Oscar Piastri could only recover to 11th place and missed out on points entirely.
Mercedes also suffered mixed fortunes despite Antonelli’s victory. Russell had led portions of the race and looked capable of fighting for the win before reliability problems abruptly ended his afternoon. The DNF proved particularly painful given Mercedes’ dominant pace throughout the weekend.
Further down the order, several drivers found themselves under investigation following the chequered flag, leading to delays before the FIA officially released the confirmed final standings. The only post-race penalty applied affected Gabriel Bortoleto, who received a five-second penalty but remained 13th in the classification.
The race also saw multiple retirements, including Fernando Alonso, Alex Albon and Sergio Perez, while Racing Bulls youngster Arvid Lindblad failed to start the race entirely.
Antonelli additionally secured the fastest lap of the Grand Prix with a stunning 1:14.210 on lap 68, further underlining Mercedes’ dominance in Montreal.
