Lewis Hamilton was investigated by the FIA after a tense qualifying session at the 2026 Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal, with several drivers coming under scrutiny from race stewards.

The Ferrari star finished qualifying in fifth place, but his hopes of securing a stronger grid position ended after he lost control slightly at Turn 7 and abandoned his final lap attempt. Soon after the session concluded, Hamilton and Alpine driver Pierre Gasly were summoned to the stewards over an alleged impeding incident at Turn 8.

The case involved a potential breach of Article B4.1.1 of the regulations, with Gasly claiming he had been blocked during a flying lap. The investigation raised concerns that Hamilton could receive a penalty that would affect his starting position for Sunday’s race.

After examining telemetry, timing data, onboard footage, team radio communications and video evidence, FIA stewards chose not to hand Hamilton a punishment. Officials confirmed that no further action would be taken against the seven-time world champion.

Hamilton explained to the stewards that he believed Gasly was not on a push lap during the incident, while Ferrari also stated that the team had reached the same conclusion from the information available at the time.

The FIA had several other incidents to review after qualifying. Aston Martin drivers Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll were both investigated for unsafe releases in the pit lane, resulting in the team receiving two fines worth a combined €15,000.

Cadillac driver Sergio Perez was also investigated following an incident involving Alonso and was later given an official reprimand. Stroll additionally faced another investigation after an alleged impeding incident with Nico Hulkenberg.

Although multiple drivers were called before the stewards, the qualifying order remained mostly unchanged, allowing Hamilton to keep his fifth-place grid slot ahead of what is expected to be a dramatic Canadian Grand Prix.
