Alex Albon has suffered a major setback at the Canadian Grand Prix after damage caused by an unexpected collision with an animal forced him out of qualifying in Montreal.
The Williams driver encountered the incident during running at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, with the impact causing significant damage to his car. Initially, the team believed repairs could be completed in time for qualifying, but a deeper inspection later revealed the extent of the problem was far worse than first anticipated.
Williams confirmed that the crash damage affected several critical components, including the gearbox and power unit, leaving the mechanics with no option but to replace both parts. Due to the scale of the repairs required and the timing restrictions across the race weekend, Albon was ultimately ruled out of participating in qualifying.
A statement from the team explained that despite intensive work in the garage, the repairs could not be completed quickly enough to get the Thai-British driver back on track.
The statement said the team had made every possible effort to rebuild the car, but the damage proved to be too extensive. Williams also admitted the situation was particularly unfortunate for Albon, who had shown promising pace throughout the weekend before the incident occurred.
While Albon’s side of the garage faced frustration, the team indicated they would now focus heavily on the data and feedback gathered by team-mate Carlos Sainz Jr. in order to maximise preparation for the remainder of the weekend.
Sainz’s running will now become even more important as Williams attempt to salvage a positive result from the Canadian GP despite the loss of one of their cars in qualifying.
The incident adds another layer of difficulty to what has already been a challenging weekend for several teams around the iconic Montreal circuit. The Circuit Gilles Villeneuve is known for its unpredictable conditions and tight walls, but wildlife encounters are also an occasional hazard due to the track’s island location.
For Albon, the timing could hardly have been worse. The 2026 season has been fiercely competitive in the midfield battle, and every qualifying session carries huge significance in the fight for points. Missing qualifying is likely to leave the Williams driver starting from the back of the grid should the team complete repairs in time for the race.
Despite the disappointment, Williams remain hopeful they can rebuild the car overnight and give Albon the opportunity to compete on Sunday.
