Oscar Piastri Linked With Shock Red Bull Switch as Max Verstappen’s Future Sparks Fresh Speculation

Fresh speculation surrounding the future of Oscar Piastri and Max Verstappen has sent the Formula 1 paddock into overdrive, with reports suggesting that the Australian star could eventually become Red Bull Racing’s next team leader in a dramatic driver-market shake-up.

The rumours come amid continuing uncertainty over Verstappen’s long-term future with Red Bull Racing, despite the Dutchman remaining one of the most dominant figures in modern Formula 1. While Verstappen is still contracted to the Milton Keynes-based squad, questions over his satisfaction with the sport’s direction particularly regarding the 2026 technical regulations have continued to fuel speculation that he could consider a sensational exit.

According to recent reports, Red Bull have internally discussed possible options should Verstappen decide to leave the team in the coming seasons. One of the names most strongly linked with the seat is current McLaren driver Piastri, who has rapidly established himself as one of the elite talents on the grid.

Piastri, 25, is currently tied to McLaren through the end of the 2028 Formula 1 season after signing a long-term extension with the Woking outfit. Since joining the team, the Australian has enjoyed a meteoric rise, helping McLaren return to the top of Formula 1 and contributing heavily to consecutive constructors’ championship successes.

The Melbourne-born driver has already amassed nine Grand Prix victories during his Formula 1 career and emerged as a genuine title contender throughout the 2025 campaign. Piastri finished third in the drivers’ standings that year after spending large portions of the season leading the championship battle.

His consistency, racecraft, and calm demeanour under pressure have made him one of the sport’s most highly regarded young drivers. Even after a difficult start to the 2026 campaign, which included two damaging DNS results, Piastri has responded impressively with consecutive podium finishes at the Japanese and Miami Grands Prix.

That form has only intensified speculation linking him with a possible blockbuster future move.

Verstappen’s position at Red Bull has become one of Formula 1’s most heavily discussed topics over the past two seasons. The reigning world champion has openly criticised aspects of the new 2026 regulations, particularly concerns surrounding the next generation of power units and the overall driving experience.

His frustration has repeatedly led to rumours connecting him with rival teams including Ferrari and McLaren, while some reports have even suggested the possibility of an early retirement from Formula 1 altogether.

If Verstappen were to depart Red Bull, the team would face the enormous challenge of replacing arguably the most complete driver of his generation. While rising talents such as Isack Hadjar remain highly rated within the Red Bull junior system, many insiders reportedly believe Piastri would represent the ideal long-term successor.

The Australian is no stranger to Red Bull admiration either.

Former Red Bull team principal Christian Horner previously admitted regret over the organisation missing the opportunity to sign Piastri earlier in his career before the youngster eventually joined McLaren. At the time, Piastri’s management situation became one of Formula 1’s biggest transfer sagas, ultimately ending with the Australian securing his McLaren drive.

Now, with Formula 1 entering another potentially volatile driver-market period, those old connections are resurfacing.

Adding further intrigue are suggestions that Piastri may not be entirely satisfied with certain aspects of McLaren’s internal dynamics, although no official indication has emerged from either the driver or the team that a departure is imminent.

Former Williams Racing driver Juan Pablo Montoya recently added fuel to the rumours while discussing the possibility of a direct swap involving Verstappen and Piastri.

“Piastri would find a seat anywhere,” Montoya reportedly stated during an interview with a bookmaker.

“There’s a suggestion that Max and Piastri could do a straight swap.”

Such a move would undoubtedly rank among the most shocking driver transfers in Formula 1 history. Verstappen joining McLaren would instantly create one of the strongest line-ups the sport has seen in years, while Piastri’s arrival at Red Bull could usher in a completely new era for the reigning champions.

For now, however, the speculation remains exactly that speculation.

Neither Red Bull nor McLaren have publicly indicated any plans involving a future driver exchange, and both Verstappen and Piastri remain under long-term agreements with their respective teams.

Still, Formula 1 has repeatedly shown that circumstances can change quickly, especially when elite drivers become available. With the sport preparing for a major regulatory overhaul in 2026, uncertainty surrounding team competitiveness could yet trigger one of the most dramatic driver-market battles in recent memory.

Whether Verstappen stays loyal to Red Bull, seeks a fresh challenge elsewhere, or whether Piastri eventually emerges as the Dutchman’s successor, one thing is already clear the Formula 1 driver market is far from settled.
