Kimi Antonelli saw his Miami Grand Prix Sprint result slip away after a late penalty reshaped the final standings.
The Mercedes rookie, who currently leads the Formula 1 drivers’ championship, had initially delivered another strong performance by finishing fourth. He also managed to come home ahead of teammate George Russell, continuing his impressive form in his debut season. However, that result was later overturned following a post-race investigation by the stewards.
Officials found that Antonelli had exceeded track limits several times during the Sprint, breaching regulations that require drivers to keep part of the car within the white lines of the circuit. As a consequence, he was handed a five-second time penalty, which was added to his overall race time after the finish.
The penalty dropped Antonelli from fourth to sixth place in the final classification. This promoted both Russell and Max Verstappen up one position each, altering the outcome of the session and costing the young Italian valuable points in the championship race.
Antonelli’s penalty was the result of repeated infractions throughout the race. He had already been shown the black-and-white flag on lap 12, serving as a formal warning for earlier track limits violations. Despite this, he exceeded track limits again on the final lap, marking his fourth offence. Under FIA rules, this automatically results in a time penalty, which was subsequently applied.
The incident highlights how strictly track limits are enforced in modern Formula 1, where even minor errors can lead to significant consequences. For Antonelli, the loss of two positions may seem small, but in a tightly contested championship, every point can prove crucial by the end of the season.
For Mercedes, the revised result brought mixed fortunes. Russell’s promotion offered some benefit to the team, but Antonelli’s drop reduced their overall points haul from the Sprint. It also underlined the importance of maintaining precision and discipline across every lap.
Looking ahead, Antonelli will need to be more careful when managing track limits if he hopes to protect his championship lead. With the margins so fine at the top, avoiding penalties could play a decisive role in his title challenge.
