FIA delivers Alex Albon verdict after Sprint qualifying confusion
The has handed a significant setback ahead of the Miami Sprint, demoting the driver to P19 following a post-session investigation into Sprint qualifying.
Confusion unfolded during Friday’s session at the as drivers prepared for SQ2. Albon was seen waiting in his car despite uncertainty over his progression, while initially eliminated in 17th rushed back to the garage amid speculation he could be reinstated.
Late ruling overturns SQ2 result
Although Lawson stood to benefit if a driver ahead was penalised, no immediate action was taken, allowing Albon to proceed into SQ2. The Thai-British driver went on to set the 14th-fastest time.
However, the stewards later confirmed Albon was under investigation for exceeding track limits during SQ1. The violation occurred at Turn 6 on his final run — an infringement that had not been flagged until after SQ2 had already begun.
Following a review, officials deleted both Albon’s best lap time from SQ1 and all his SQ2 laps. The ruling effectively stripped him of his qualifying progress and dropped him from P14 to P19 on the Sprint grid.
Stewards explain delayed decision
In their statement, the FIA clarified the timing issue behind the controversy:
“During SQ1, Car 23 clearly exceeded track limits in Turn 6. However, this was not reported to the Stewards until SQ2 had commenced.”
The delayed call created a procedural grey area, allowing Albon to continue competing before the infringement was formally addressed — ultimately leading to the retroactive penalty.
The decision reshuffles the lower order of the Sprint grid and raises further questions about real-time officiating and track limits enforcement in Formula 1’s compressed Sprint qualifying format.
