Max Verstappen suffers penalty frustrating as champion addresses exit da…. See details

Max Verstappen has spoken out following a turbulent development involving his racing team, as fresh controversy and penalties added to an already dramatic weekend in motorsport. The reigning champion is now facing a more difficult challenge ahead of the NLS4 race at the Nürburgring, after a grid penalty reshuffled his team’s starting position.
The issue arose during qualifying for Race 1 of the ADAC 24h Nürburgring Qualifiers, where Verstappen’s team, Mercedes-AMG Team Verstappen Racing, became the subject of an investigation by the DMSB stewards. The qualifying session itself had already been disrupted earlier by a red flag due to a separate crash, setting a tense tone for the proceedings.
During the resumed session, Verstappen’s teammate, Lucas Auer, was involved in an incident with a Porsche Cayman. The collision triggered a review by race officials, who carefully examined the circumstances leading up to the contact between the two cars.
According to the stewards’ findings, the driver of car 941 maintained his racing line and claimed he did not notice the faster-approaching car behind him. On the other hand, Auer, who was driving car 3, admitted that he had seen an opportunity to pass but ultimately misjudged the situation. He acknowledged his error and reportedly apologized to the other driver immediately after completing his stint.
After considering both perspectives, the stewards concluded that Auer bore responsibility for the incident. As a result, they imposed a three-place grid penalty on Team Verstappen for the race scheduled later that day. The decision reflects the officials’ view that while the mistake was not reckless, it warranted a sporting consequence.
This penalty significantly impacts Verstappen’s team, as it drops them from their original qualifying position of P6 down to P9 on the starting grid. In a highly competitive endurance racing environment like the Nürburgring, even a small grid drop can make a substantial difference, especially given the technical demands and unpredictability of the circuit.
Meanwhile, at the front of the grid, David Jahn delivered an outstanding performance to secure pole position. Driving the No. 23 BMW for Gamota Racing, Jahn set the fastest lap time of 8:09.488, placing him in a strong position heading into the race.
Close behind, Schnitzelalm Racing claimed second place for KCMG, demonstrating strong pace and consistency throughout the session. Rounding out the top three was 48 LOSCH Motorsport by Black Falcon, with Daan Pijl—competing under the name ‘Daan Arrow’—also making a notable impression with his performance.
The developments add another layer of pressure on Verstappen, who is already dealing with broader discussions surrounding his future and team dynamics. With the grid penalty now confirmed, the focus shifts to how effectively his team can recover during the race itself.
As the NLS4 event unfolds, all eyes will be on Verstappen and his team to see whether they can overcome this setback and climb back up the order in one of the most challenging racing environments in the world.
