FIA Issue Major penalty on  Lewis Hamilton After Difficult Qualifying at Suzuka
Seven-time Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton endured a frustrating qualifying session at the Suzuka International Circuit, as FIA stewards intervened during the closing stages of the Japanese Grand Prix shootout.
Hamilton struggled to match the pace of his Ferrari team-mate Charles Leclerc throughout the weekend, and those difficulties persisted into qualifying. While Leclerc secured fourth place on the grid — and appeared capable of mounting a stronger challenge for pole position were it not for a minor error on his final flying lap — Hamilton was unable to extract consistent performance across all three sectors.
The British driver found it difficult to piece together a clean lap in Q3, ultimately settling for sixth place. He qualified behind both McLaren cars and his team-mate, underlining a gap in performance that has defined much of his weekend at Suzuka.
Hamilton’s deficit was particularly evident when compared to pole-sitter Kimi Antonelli. The 19-year-old continued his impressive form by securing top spot on the grid, finishing nearly seven-tenths of a second ahead of Hamilton. Antonelli once again outperformed the field, including his Mercedes team-mate George Russell, further strengthening his growing reputation as one of the sport’s most promising talents.
Adding to Hamilton’s difficulties, FIA race stewards displayed a black-and-white flag during Q3 after determining that he had driven too slowly at the pit exit. The flag serves as an official warning for unsporting or potentially dangerous driving conduct, typically relating to driving standards rather than technical infringements.
In this instance, the stewards ruled that Hamilton’s pace at pit exit warranted a caution, but no further sporting penalty was imposed. As a result, his sixth-place qualifying result stands unchanged heading into race day.
While the warning had no direct impact on the grid order, it compounded a challenging session for the veteran driver, who will now aim to recover positions during the race. With Ferrari showing flashes of competitive pace and Antonelli continuing to set the benchmark, Hamilton faces a demanding task if he is to challenge for a podium finish at Suzuka.
