Aston Martin F1 Team have confirmed that rising talent Jak Crawford will participate in a Free Practice session at the upcoming Japanese Grand Prix, marking the team’s first rookie outing of the 2026 Formula 1 season.
The 20-year-old American is set to take over driving duties from two-time world champion Fernando Alonso for the session. While the team has not clarified whether the decision is strategically aimed at preserving Alonso amid ongoing physical demands or simply part of its pre-season development plan, the move comes at a noteworthy moment in Aston Martin’s campaign.
Under Formula 1 regulations, each team is required to allocate two practice sessions per car to a rookie driver during the season. This session represents Aston Martin’s first compliance with that mandate in 2026—and notably the first such rookie appearance across the grid this year.
The timing of Crawford’s inclusion has attracted attention due to the team’s widely reported reliability concerns. The AMR26 has experienced significant technical challenges in the opening rounds, including pronounced vibration issues. Both Alonso and teammate Lance Stroll have struggled with the car’s handling characteristics, at times finding it difficult to complete extended race stints comfortably.
Against this backdrop, Crawford’s participation suggests a substantial test of both driver and machinery. Although he gained valuable experience with two FP1 appearances for Aston Martin toward the end of last season, stepping into a car currently facing performance and durability questions presents a far greater challenge.
