Ferrari have made a surprise late call ahead of the 2026 Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka, confirming a change to their FP1 driver line-up following an unexpected issue involving Lewis Hamilton.
The seven-time world champion was initially scheduled to take part in the opening practice session as Ferrari continue to fine-tune their SF-26 package. However, the Italian team revealed early Friday morning that Hamilton would not be participating due to what they described as a “sudden and temporary physical setback.”
While Ferrari stopped short of providing full medical details, insiders suggest Hamilton experienced discomfort during pre-session preparations, prompting the team to take a precautionary approach. With a long and demanding race weekend ahead at the iconic Suzuka Circuit, Ferrari opted not to take any risks.
Stepping into the car for FP1 will be Ferrari junior driver Oliver Bearman, who has already impressed the paddock with his maturity and pace during previous outings. The 20-year-old has been closely working with Ferrari’s engineering team throughout the season and was already scheduled for simulator duties during the weekend.
Speaking in a brief statement, Ferrari team principal Frédéric Vasseur said:
“Lewis is feeling okay, but we decided together that it’s best for him to sit out FP1. It’s a long weekend, and we want him at 100% for qualifying and the race. Oliver is ready, and this is a good opportunity for him to get valuable track time.”
Bearman’s inclusion adds intrigue to the opening session, particularly as Ferrari look to maintain pressure on early-season leaders Mercedes. The young Brit will be tasked with gathering crucial data on tyre performance and track evolution, especially with changing weather conditions expected throughout the weekend.
Hamilton is still expected to return to the cockpit for FP2 later in the day, though Ferrari have stated they will continue to monitor his condition closely before making a final call.
The sudden change has already sparked speculation across the paddock, with rivals keeping a close eye on Ferrari’s situation. Should Hamilton’s issue linger, it could have significant implications for the championship battle as the 2026 season begins to heat up.
For now, all eyes will be on Bearman as he gets a rare opportunity to shine on one of Formula 1’s most challenging circuits.
