A dramatic revelation has emerged from Helmut Marko, who confirmed that he once blocked Max Verstappen from attempting one of motorsport’s most dangerous challenges — driving a modern Formula 1 car around the legendary Nürburgring Nordschleife.
Speaking ahead of Verstappen’s anticipated return to the iconic German circuit, Marko revisited the moment he intervened to stop what he considered an unnecessarily risky idea. The Nordschleife, famously nicknamed the “Green Hell,” is widely regarded as one of the most unforgiving tracks in the world. Its combination of narrow tarmac, blind crests, high-speed corners, and limited run-off areas has tested even the most experienced drivers for decades.
According to Marko, Verstappen’s interest in the circuit is nothing new. The Dutch driver has long been fascinated by the Nordschleife and its unique challenge. However, his ambitions once went far beyond simply racing on the track in a GT or endurance car. Instead, Verstappen had reportedly pushed for a demonstration run in a current-spec Red Bull Racing Formula 1 car — a proposal that immediately raised serious concerns within the team’s leadership.
Marko admitted that the idea was quickly shut down. From his perspective, putting a modern F1 car on such a circuit was not just ambitious, but dangerously impractical. Today’s Formula 1 machines are engineered for wide, smooth tracks with advanced safety features, large run-off zones, and carefully controlled conditions. The Nordschleife, by contrast, is a long, unpredictable circuit with very little margin for error — making it unsuitable for such high-performance machinery.
The Austrian advisor emphasized that there was never any genuine consideration given to approving Verstappen’s request. Safety remained the overriding factor, and the potential consequences of even a minor mistake were deemed far too severe.
Marko also shed light on what may have inspired Verstappen’s bold idea. He pointed to Timo Bernhard’s extraordinary lap record at the Nordschleife in 2018, set in Porsche’s revolutionary Porsche 919 Hybrid Evo. That lap, widely regarded as one of the most impressive achievements in modern motorsport, demonstrated the extreme limits of performance on the daunting circuit.
It is believed that Verstappen, known for his relentless competitiveness and desire to push boundaries, was intrigued by the possibility of beating that benchmark in a Formula 1 car. While the idea captured the imagination of fans, Marko insisted that it crossed a line when it came to safety.
The combination of extreme speed, relentless corners, and minimal escape routes creates a level of risk that even top-tier drivers cannot fully mitigate.
