Passenger Goes Overboard—Only to Be Rescued by Jet Ski Driven by Carnival Bartender

In a scene that seemed straight out of an action movie, a Carnival Cruise passenger was miraculously rescued after going overboard—by none other than the ship’s bartender, riding a jet ski.

The incident occurred late Tuesday evening aboard the Carnival Odyssey, just off the coast of the Bahamas. According to eyewitnesses, the passenger, identified only as “Mike from Ohio,” had been leaning over the railing to take a selfie when a strong gust of wind knocked him into the water. Panic ensued as the ship’s alarm was sounded.

Before the official rescue crew could deploy, bartender Rico Santos—known to passengers for his killer mojitos and flair for the dramatic—jumped into action. Grabbing a jet ski used for onboard excursions, Santos sped into the waves, navigating rough waters with shocking precision.

“I saw him go in and didn’t think twice,” Santos said. “I’m certified in mixology and lifesaving.”

Within minutes, he reached the flailing passenger, pulling him aboard and returning to the cruise ship to a roaring ovation from fellow guests. Carnival Cruise Lines has since praised Santos for his heroism and awarded him with a “Golden Shaker” medal and a month of paid leave.

As for Mike? “Next time,” he laughed, “I’m taking my selfies from insidethe ship.”
