Nottingham Forest Eyeing €10m Move for Brazilian Striker Clayton Amid Awoniyi Uncertainty
Nottingham Forest are preparing to strengthen their attacking options this summer, with uncertainty surrounding the future of Taiwo Awoniyi.
Everton expressed interest in the 27-year-old in January, and although no transfer materialized, more suitors are expected to emerge ahead of the new season. Should Awoniyi depart, additional pressure would fall on 33-year-old Chris Wood. Despite an impressive season that earned him a contract extension, Forest cannot rely on him to lead the attack in every match due to his age.
Head coach Nuno Espirito Santo is already being linked with reinforcements, with Brazilian striker Clayton—currently on loan at Rio Ave—emerging as a target. According to Portuguese outlet Record, the 26-year-old is attracting interest from Portuguese giants FC Porto, Benfica, and Sporting Lisbon. However, Clayton has also been offered to Forest and Olympiakos, both clubs owned by Evangelos Marinakis.
Though Rio Ave is also part of Marinakis’ portfolio, Clayton is officially contracted to Brazilian side Vasco da Gama. Still, he’s expected to be available for €10 million (£8.7 million) this summer.
Clayton has enjoyed a strong campaign in Portugal, scoring 13 goals in 26 league games—accounting for 43% of Rio Ave’s total goals this season. His previous form has been less consistent, including a goalless stint at Vasco da Gama and six goals in 24 appearances for Casa Pia A.C.
Overall, Clayton has scored 45 goals in 162 club appearances, according to Transfermarkt. Whether Forest will act on their interest remains to be seen.
