Phil Jones has openly criticized Anthony Martial’s persistent lateness during their time together at Manchester United. Now retired from football and pursuing a coaching career, Jones has been sharing insights from his 12 years at the club through various media platforms.
When asked at a recent public event about which player was most notorious for tardiness, Jones didn’t hold back, naming Martial as a repeat offender. He revealed that Martial was often late for training, meetings, and team travel, and accumulated numerous fines for his lack of punctuality, though it seemingly didn’t faze the French forward.
Jones joined United in 2011 as a highly-rated 19-year-old and went on to win the Premier League in Sir Alex Ferguson’s final season before the club entered a prolonged period of decline. Despite enduring frequent injuries that hampered both their careers, Jones and Martial shared many years as teammates.
Martial, now 28, is currently enjoying an injury-free season and has scored three goals in seven appearances. As he approaches his peak years, he will likely aim for a move back to one of Europe’s top leagues, or perhaps a lucrative transfer to MLS or Saudi Arabia.
Meanwhile, Jones is working towards his coaching badges and has already gained experience with Manchester United’s youth teams. He has also ventured into punditry, appearing on podcasts and YouTube channels to discuss his experiences and offer insights into his playing career.
