Report: Pierluigi Collina and FIFA’s ‘alternative VAR’ plans will intrigue Celtic supporters

FIFA’s Alternative VAR Plans May Interest Celtic Fans

VAR has been a contentious topic for Celtic supporters since its introduction in October 2022. While the technology has occasionally worked in Celtic’s favor, it has also been the source of numerous controversial decisions, leaving fans frustrated. Two years on, it seems FIFA is exploring a new approach to address ongoing issues with refereeing technology.

#### FIFA Trials ‘Football Video Support’ (FVS)

According to ESPN, FIFA is seeking approval from the International Football Association Board (IFAB) to trial *Football Video Support* (FVS). This system allows coaches to challenge up to two referee decisions per game, making it a more cost-effective and streamlined alternative to VAR.

Former FIFA referee Pierluigi Collina emphasized that FVS differs from VAR. With a limited number of cameras—ideally 4–5—FVS is not equipped to provide the same level of detail as VAR. For example, precise offsides may not always be detectable without properly positioned cameras. The on-field referee’s judgment will remain crucial.

#### Impact on Smaller Leagues

FIFA acknowledges that the high costs and resources required for VAR implementation make it inaccessible for many associations, including smaller leagues like Scotland. FVS offers a more affordable solution, giving referees additional support without significantly disrupting gameplay.

#### Potential Impact on Celtic

If FVS had been available this season, Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers might have challenged several contentious decisions:

1. **St. Johnstone vs. Celtic**: Daizen Maeda’s disallowed goal due to a foul by Auston Trusty.

2. **Motherwell vs. Celtic**: A penalty not awarded to Maeda after a foul by Motherwell defenders.

3. **Celtic vs. Rangers**: Kyogo Furuhashi’s incorrectly disallowed goal for offside.

These challenges could have changed the outcomes of key matches, potentially influencing league standings or even title races.

Looking Ahead

By introducing coaching challenges, FVS aims to improve decision-making and fairness while keeping the game affordable for leagues with limited resources. Whether or not FIFA adopts this system, it’s a step towards enhancing refereeing standards globally—something that would undoubtedly benefit Celtic and other clubs alike.
