Celtic transfer fail revealed as striker rejected near £40k per week deal for contract worth less than half

Troy Deeney recently revealed he turned down a lucrative offer from Celtic during Ange Postecoglou’s time as manager. Despite being offered nearly £40,000 a week, Deeney opted to join Birmingham City for significantly less—around £12,000 weekly—primarily for family reasons. Deeney, a lifelong Birmingham fan, prioritized staying close to home for his children and family responsibilities over the opportunity to play in Scotland.

 

The former Watford striker, who spent 11 years with the club, also disclosed that he had offers from Middlesbrough under Neil Warnock and several clubs abroad. However, staying near his family ultimately influenced his decision to join Birmingham, where he could be “home” despite the financial trade-off.
