£3.7m wasted: Celtic messed up with Rodgers flop who earned as much as Matt O’Riley – opinion

Celtic’s recent history has been marked by both successes and missteps, and one of the latter has been the underwhelming return of Brendan Rodgers. After a highly celebrated first stint with Celtic, Rodgers’ return was expected to bring renewed dominance to the Scottish Premiership and strong performances in Europe. However, results have not met these high expectations, and the disparity between his substantial earnings and the outcomes on the pitch has been hard to ignore.

Rodgers, reportedly earning close to the club’s top-paid players, such as Matt O’Riley, was expected to deliver high-caliber results consistently. While Matt O’Riley, a record-breaking signing from Brighton, has proven his worth in the midfield when fit, contributing significantly to Celtic’s tactical depth, Rodgers’ managerial choices and some tactical experiments have often backfired, exposing the team’s weaknesses rather than covering them.

Supporters expected Rodgers to elevate Celtic’s European stature, but his tenure has struggled to replicate the success of his earlier years. The decision to re-sign him on such a high wage has come under scrutiny, especially considering the investments made in Celtic’s playing squad and the high expectations from fans. With wages comparable to top performers like O’Riley, Rodgers now faces rising pressure to deliver or risk his reputation further among the Celtic faithful.
