Brendan Rodgers has shed light on a pressing contract situation surrounding Celtic’s left-back, Greg Taylor. Taylor, whose current deal runs out in July, could sign a pre-contract with another club in just a couple of months, which raises concerns for Rodgers, given Taylor’s importance to Celtic’s style of play. While other key players have signed extensions, including Callum McGregor, Kyogo Furuhashi, Reo Hatate, and Matt O’Riley, Taylor has yet to agree to new terms under Rodgers, despite being a mainstay in the team lineup and praised frequently for his consistency and leadership.
Rodgers emphasized Taylor’s tactical value, particularly in Celtic’s recent Champions League victory over RB Leipzig, where Taylor’s adaptability and skills were vital against Leipzig’s high press. Rodgers explained how Taylor and his counterpart, Alex Valle, offer different qualities, both integral to the team’s strategy, and he views Taylor as a specialist in his role. Not only does he excel on the field, but Taylor is also a significant presence off the pitch, bringing leadership and stability to the squad. Rodgers spoke about Taylor’s dedication in training and the positive influence he has in the locker room, underscoring his desire to keep working with him.
Rodgers also touched on Taylor’s personal milestones, noting that the defender has recently married and is expecting a child, adding that the club wants to support him in settling down at Celtic long-term. However, Rodgers acknowledged that both sides need to come to an agreement soon, or the club may have to plan for alternative solutions.
With Taylor and Valle each starting in recent high-stakes games, there’s anticipation over who will be chosen for the upcoming match against Kilmarnock on Sunday.
