CCFPA Chairman Billy Bell has been traveling around the UK again, combining his love for British racecourses and football games with reconnecting with former Sky Blues players. Previously, he’s visited racecourses and connected with ex-players in Northern England and Scotland, including legends like Keith Houchen, Nick Pickering, Kevan Smith, Tommy Hutchison, and Roy Barry. This time, he ventured south to Plumpton races in East Sussex with his friend Taff, who is just a few racecourses shy of visiting every one in Britain!
Since Plumpton is close to Brighton, Billy also took the chance to meet up with former Coventry City defensive star Chris Cattlin and his wife Maureen. Known as “Spider” or “the Cat” during his CCFC days, Chris played over 236 games for the Sky Blues between 1968 and 1976. Billy shared that they had a great time together, sharing laughs and reminiscing. At one point, Chris joked about a high chair at their table, suggesting it was for their mutual friend and former CCFC player, Willie Carr.
During the visit, Billy presented Chris with one of the club’s new polo shirts and some old team photos for Maureen’s scrapbook, which Chris appreciated. He expressed his deep connection to Coventry and CCFC, promising to attend both a fixture in the new year and this season’s Legends Day to reunite with former teammates.
Billy also caught the London to Brighton car rally that same weekend and was delighted to see BBC CWR broadcaster and dedicated Sky Blue fan Vic Minnett among the participants in a vintage car, proving it’s indeed a small world!
