A long-standing UEFA Champions League record involving Celtic, Paris Saint-Germain, and the Parc des Princes was finally broken last night.
PSG faced Atlético Madrid in matchday four of the league phase, with both teams trailing Celtic in the standings before and after the match. Atlético secured a dramatic 2-1 victory, with Ángel Correa scoring a last-minute winner, but PSG had taken the lead early on.
The opening goal came from PSG midfielder Warren Zaïre-Emery, who was set up by Ousmane Dembélé. The 18-year-old produced a delightful dink over Atlético goalkeeper Jan Oblak to give PSG the lead. At just 18 years and 243 days old, Zaïre-Emery became the youngest scorer in UEFA Champions League history at the Parc des Princes, surpassing Kylian Mbappé, who had previously held the record at 18 years and 337 days when he scored against Celtic in November 2017.
That match, which ended 7-1 in PSG’s favor, remains a painful memory for Celtic, as Mbappé, Neymar, and the rest of the PSG squad ran riot after an early goal from Moussa Dembélé briefly gave Celtic hope.
It’s a notable achievement for Zaïre-Emery to break a record previously held by Mbappé, and Celtic will certainly hope he doesn’t follow in the footsteps of the now-Real Madrid star, who haunted them in that unforgettable match all those years ago.
