Explained: The Mystery of Empty Rows at Celtic Park on Champions League Nights

For fans attending UEFA Champions League games at Celtic Park, the sight of three empty rows encircling the pitch can be a bit of a mystery, especially with the high demand for tickets on these prized European nights.

The reason, however, isn’t due to low interest or unsold tickets—it’s a byproduct of modern football’s commercial requirements. As explained by John Paul Taylor, Celtic’s Supporter Liaison Officer, these empty rows result from advertising board placements required by UEFA. The boards block the view from the first three rows, so Celtic opts not to sell these obstructed seats to ensure fans have an optimal viewing experience.

Despite this compromise, Celtic Park’s atmosphere remains electric on European nights. When Celtic took the lead against RB Leipzig on Tuesday, the stadium erupted, and fan groups continue looking for ways to enhance the already intense atmosphere. The Green Brigade and Bhoys Celtic have proposed a designated fan section, known as The Celtic End, to boost this further, though progress on the initiative has mainly been limited to appearances at Women’s games so far.
