For fans attending UEFA Champions League matches at Celtic Park, the sight of three empty rows circling the pitch can be a bit of a head-scratcher, especially considering the high demand for tickets on these prestigious European nights.
However, these vacant seats aren’t due to a lack of interest or ticket sales, but rather a result of the commercial demands of modern football.
John Paul Taylor, Celtic’s Supporter Liaison Officer, has previously explained that the empty rows are a consequence of advertising requirements during UEFA matches. On these European nights, advertising boards are placed around the pitch, often blocking the view from the first three rows. To ensure fans have an unobstructed view and an enjoyable experience, Celtic opts not to sell these affected seats.
Despite this minor compromise, the atmosphere at Celtic Park during Champions League nights remains absolutely electric. When Celtic took the lead against RB Leipzig on Tuesday, the roar from the stands was deafening, and the intensity of the fans’ support made it clear that the stadium is still a fortress.
Celtic supporters are always looking for ways to enhance the matchday experience, and one such initiative is the “Celtic End” plan, proposed by the Green Brigade and Bhoys Celtic. However, progress on this idea has been slow, with the concept having only been trialed in Women’s games so far. Nevertheless, the desire to create an even more vibrant atmosphere at Celtic Park remains strong.
