Why Brendan Rodgers was fortunate to avoid a red card at Hampden as ‘common sense prevails’ in the incident
Brendan Rodgers narrowly escaped a red card during a recent match at Hampden, with referee Kevin Clancy receiving commendation for his sensible decision-making. The Celtic manager had a mishap when he fell while attempting to kick the ball back into play, resulting in him receiving a yellow card. Bobby Madden, a former referee, noted that according to the rules, Rodgers should have been sent off for the incident. However, he praised Clancy for exercising discretion and only issuing a yellow card during the semi-final against Aberdeen.
Madden shared a video clip of the moment, highlighting the clear infraction where Rodgers delayed the game by kicking the ball away as it went out for a throw-in to Aberdeen. He remarked that while the rules stipulate a red card for such behavior, the referee opted for common sense instead.
Rodgers later reflected on his fall, acknowledging it was a clumsy moment and attributing it to kicking the ball onto the field. He quickly got back on his feet, likely out of embarrassment, admitting the surface was a bit slippery.
In the match, Celtic secured a convincing victory, scoring six goals against Aberdeen, marking the latter’s first defeat since Jimmy Thelin took over as manager. Celtic will next return to Hampden for the Premier Sports Cup Final, where they will face either Rangers or Motherwell.
