Celtic showcased their offensive dominance by defeating Aberdeen 6-0 in the Scottish League Cup semi-final on Saturday at Hampden Park.
This match was highly anticipated, not only because a spot in the League Cup final was at stake, but also because Celtic and Aberdeen are currently Scotland’s top two teams.
Their last encounter saw Aberdeen rally from a 2-0 deficit to secure a 2-2 draw at Parkhead, but this time, the outcome was drastically different. Celtic proved why they are reigning champions under Brendan Rodgers, smothering Aberdeen’s efforts and never allowing them to get a foothold.
Although a Celtic victory was widely expected, especially after Aberdeen’s midweek win over Rangers, the comprehensive and ruthless nature of the win came as a surprise to many.
Daizen Maeda stole the show with a stunning hat-trick, while Cameron Carter-Vickers, Kyogo Furuhashi, and Nicolas Kuhn each added a goal. During the match, Chris Sutton posed a question about Aberdeen’s performance.
Sutton, speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live Sport’s 606, noted that Aberdeen has been the only team to keep pace with Celtic this season, though the impact of this heavy defeat will be something to watch moving forward.
Sutton doesn’t believe Aberdeen’s early-season momentum has ended just because of this loss. However, he acknowledged that Celtic looks likely to keep growing stronger, and he’s interested to see how Aberdeen will respond.
Celtic now turns their attention to the Champions League with a home game against RB Leipzig, following their recent draw with Atalanta. Meanwhile, Aberdeen will regroup as they prepare for their next Scottish Premiership match.
Upcoming league fixtures for both teams will see Celtic facing Kilmarnock, Hearts, and Ross County, while Aberdeen’s schedule includes matches against Dundee, St. Mirren, and Hibernian, with their next clash against Celtic scheduled for December 4.
