Former Celtic player Pat Bonner believes Liam Scales has reason to feel disappointed after being left out of Celtic’s lineup against Aberdeen. Despite Scales’ strong performances in recent matches, manager Brendan Rodgers opted to start Cameron Carter-Vickers, who returned to the lineup, alongside Auston Trusty.
Supporters were already sympathetic toward Scales before the game, as the defender has established himself well in recent games, including key performances in both the Champions League and Scottish Premiership. However, Rodgers decided to shake things up in today’s Hampden match.
This choice proved effective, as Celtic secured a dominant 6-0 victory over Aberdeen, with Carter-Vickers contributing a goal and helping the team maintain a clean sheet.
In a BBC Sportsound discussion, Bonner expressed empathy for his fellow Irishman, acknowledging the challenge of being benched to allow Carter-Vickers and Trusty to pair up. He noted that Rodgers faces a tough decision when it comes to selecting his central defense duo.
Bonner highlighted that while both Scales and Trusty have been solid together, and Scales has also shown good chemistry with Carter-Vickers, Trusty and Carter-Vickers delivered two strong performances together. However, Bonner felt that Scales, who hasn’t made any significant errors, has a valid reason to feel frustrated about being dropped.
He commented, “Scales should feel disappointed, as he’s done nothing wrong to lose his place. When you’re performing well in the team, you typically deserve to stay until something changes.”
Bonner added that Rodgers has flexibility with his central defense choices, given the quality combinations available.
